Great Tips from You!

Does your family enjoy outdoor meals in the summer? Tell us your favorite tips and recipes for the grill or picnic basket.

Tip #1 from Linda in Cleveland, OH

My husband and I love to visit the Farmer's Market and pick up all sorts of vegetables. We cover our grill grate with non-stick foil, spray a little butter flavored cooking spray, and grill all of our cleaned and sliced veggies. We enjoy them on whole wheat tortillas spread with roasted red pepper, or sometimes garlic flavored hummus. A nice chunk of watermelon for dessert completes our favorite summer meal.

Tip #2 from Barbara in Florida

Our family loves "Picnic Pitas". I stuff pita bread halves with our favorite fillings (meat and cheese plus some veggies like thin sliced cucumbers, shredded carrots, spinach leaves). When it's time for our picnic meal I set out ranch dressing to top these tasty, tidy pocket sandwiches.

Tip #3 from Pam in Pennsylvania

In the summer, we barbecue kabobs on the grill at least once a week. Just cube a pound or less of meat (beef, pork or chicken) and marinate it for a few minutes in your favorite vinaigrette dressing. While the meat marinates, prep two or three kinds of veggies. String everything on skewers, brush with a little more marinade, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and grill for 5 to 10 minutes. Instant gourmet fare!

Tip #4 from Jan in South Dakota

My family always asks for fried chicken when we're planning a picnic. I prefer homemade oven-baked chicken, but I'll stop at a deli counter if time is short. Pasta salad is another picnic essential, along with fresh fruits like berries or watermelon, and some brownies.
